I was kneeling on the ground when it began. “Did you hear that?” Ryan perked up too. “Is it thunder?” He wasn’t sure. It could have been a loud truck. But then, a low menacing growl tore out through the sky. I opened the door to the front porch. Graceful, ambient music of falling rain entered my head. Heavily laden clouds, Passing through with bitter remarks of thunder. With an overabundance of childish glee I skipped to the back of the house to get a glance from the back porch. It was… Intense. So much lightning. Soft, wet and grey. Pattering rain tickled the metal that covered the parking spots. Ryan shouldn’t be missing this. With a little bit of encouragement I managed to lure him to view the sky with me. We were wrapped up in the same comforter, staring up. An electric pink web flashed across the sky. Followed immediately by a crack of thunder. Very close. I was so excited. I gave Ryan a warm hug. As in answer to my feelings the rain began to plummet down. ’Did you bring this rain?’ Heavy rain. Buckets. Pouring. A whole animal shelter. And hail. Little pea-sized drops of ice. It created a huge deafening roar as it hit the ground and everything else in its downward path. We watched the walkways flood. I couldn’t help myself. I put on Ryan’s fireman coat and ran outside. In my sandals mind you. With socks. The freezing puddles permeated them within seconds. My sandals filled with water. Squish… squish… I waved up at Ryan. I was soaked. Through a bit of laughter and coaxing he managed to ask me back inside. :”You’re a dork.” He says as he pushes the cold, dripping hair out of my face. “Yep, I know.” We’re both big dorks. No Mike, not that kind. And at least the world didn’t end. I heard that before he went to bed. Ryan left the door open to the bedroom porch. To listen to the rain, and the wind chimes. He fell asleep. I think he remembers. We remember the rain. |
